An addicting roguelite with much more strategy than I expected

4 / 5

Played on Steam in Early 2026, Switch July 2026

Ring of Pain was one of those games in my backlog I came across while trying to clean out all the old Steam games I’ve purchased but haven’t played.

It’s a card-based roguelite where you go through dungeons defeating enemies, earning currency, and opening chests to improve your equipment.

It sounds simple, but there are many strategic choices to make like choosing to avoid poison enemies, evading self-destructing enemies to explode and kill stronger enemies, and picking which stats to level up and when.

Runs have just enough randomness so you feel agency in each run as well as feeling fresh each time. I never felt like I could use the same strategy each run, but there were some equipment cards I went with every time I had the chance. Runs only last from a few minutes to up to a half an hour so you always feel like you just need “one more run.”

I also played this on switch. I’ve beat it on easy and medium difficulty, but don’t plan on trying to complete the hardest difficulty. But I’ll keep it on my Switch to play a run every once in a while to see how far I can go.
